Abstract

Based on the researcher experience in teaching practice, the researcher found problems in learning English in SMPN 3 Ujungbatu. The problems that students found by researcher students‟ low interest in learning English, because some students‟ consider if learning English was a difficult lesson and difficult to understand. Environmental factors were less supportive for learning English, both school environment and family environment. The purpose of this research was to find out the significant effect of using Role Play on students‟ motivation in learning English. In this research, the researcher used true-experiment post test only design. There were 66 samples joined the research which was divided 33 students‟ into control class and 33 students‟ into experimental class. The instrumentation of the research were questionnaire and Interview. Finding T-test showed that mean score of the students‟ motivation in the control group is 56,58 which is lower than one in the experimental group 64,17. In addition, it obviously displayed that the t obtained > t (5,543 >2,051) with p value 0,000 < 0,05. Therefore, Ho was rejected and Ha was accpeted. In conclusion, the role play had an effect on students‟ motivation. Students enjoyed the teaching and learning process using the role play and role play had an effect to motivate students, made students more enthusiastic in learning English since the students are involved directly in the activities
