Abstract
Request expressions are among the most common directive speech acts in human communication, and literary works such as drama provide authentic dialogue for observing how such expressions are realized and interpreted. While previous studies on request expressions have largely examined language learners and film discourse, limited attention has been given to how both the forms and pragmatic meanings of requests operate within dramatic literary texts. This study addresses that gap by analyzing the request expressions found in Augustin Daly's drama Under the Gaslight. Using a descriptive qualitative design, the researcher acted as the primary instrument, reading the script, identifying request utterances, classifying them according to Request Strategy Theory, and interpreting their pragmatic meanings based on dialogue context. The analysis identified twenty-one request expressions distributed across three strategies: Direct Request (9 instances), Conventionally Indirect Request (6 instances), and Non- Conventionally Indirect Request (5 instances). The findings show that direct requests dominate the dialogue, typically used in emotionally charged exchanges demanding an immediate response, while conventionally indirect and non-conventionally indirect requests are employed to preserve politeness and social harmony. The pragmatic meanings of these expressions were shaped by power relations, social distance, emotional condition, and communicative purpose. The study concludes that understanding request expressions in dramatic discourse requires both grammatical and pragmatic competence, and recommends the use of drama as authentic material for teaching pragmatics.
