Abstract

This research explored the use of adjectives and adverbs in descriptive texts written by eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Rambah. The study aimed to identify the kinds of adjectives and adverbs used by students in their descriptive writing. A qualitative descriptive design was employed to examine students’ authentic language use. The data were collected through a descriptive writing task on the topic of People and analyzed using the qualitative data analysis model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that students used six categories of adjectives and adverbs: descriptive adjectives, possessive adjectives, comparative adjectives, quantitative adjectives, adverbs of degree, and adverbs of frequency. Descriptive adjectives were the most frequently used category, followed by possessive adjectives, adverbs of degree, adverbs of frequency, comparative adjectives, and quantitative adjectives. However, demonstrative adjectives and adverbs of manner, time, and place were not found in the students’ writing. These findings indicate that students relied mainly on descriptive adjectives to describe physical appearance and personal characteristics, while the use of adverbs was relatively limited. The study concludes that adjectives play a more significant role than adverbs in students’ descriptive texts. The findings are expected to support English teachers in improving grammar instruction and developing students’ descriptive writing skills.
