Abstract

This research aims to identify and analyze the representation of moral values in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The study focuses on the types of moral values reflected in the novel and how these values are represented through characters, dialogues, actions, events, and social conflicts. This research employed a qualitative research design with a thematic content analysis approach. The primary source of data was Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, while the data consisted of words, phrases, sentences, dialogues, character actions, events, and narratives related to moral values. The data were analyzed through systematic identification, classification, interpretation, and thematic analysis based on the relevant theoretical frameworks, including Stuart Hall’s Representation Theory, Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development, and Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics. The findings revealed fourteen representative data classified into seven categories of moral values: empathy, courage, tolerance, responsibility, compassion, justice, and gratitude. Each category was represented by two data, demonstrating that moral values are consistently integrated into the development of the characters and the events of the novel. Among these values, courage was found to be the most dominant moral value, followed by empathy, tolerance, responsibility, compassion, justice, and gratitude. The findings also show that moral values are represented through the experiences and actions of Atticus Finch, Scout Finch, and Jem Finch, particularly in their responses to prejudice, racial injustice, discrimination, and social inequality. Overall, the study concludes that To Kill a Mockingbird represents moral values not only through direct dialogue but also through characters’ behavior, experiences, conflicts, and narrative events. The novel therefore provides valuable moral lessons and can serve as a meaningful source for moral reflection and character education.
