Abstract

This research aimed to identify the kinds, forms, and functions of nonverbal communication used by fifth-semester students in English drama performances at the University of Pasir Pengaraian. This research employed a descriptive quantitative design involving 16 students, with data collected through observation, a 45-item questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The findings showed four kinds of nonverbal communication: facial expressions, body movements and gestures, eye contact, and intonation, which were used to express emotions, develop characters, support verbal messages, and convey meaning. The questionnaire results showed high mean scores for nonverbal communication characteristics (4.08), kinds (4.04), and English drama performance indicators, including features (4.15), characteristics (4.14), and functions (3.89). The findings indicate that the use of nonverbal communication is an important element in English drama performances because it helps students deliver messages effectively and make their performances more expressive and comprehensible.
