Abstract

This research aimed to identify the forms and analyze the pragmatic meanings of prohibitive expressions used by the characters in Under the Gaslight by Augustin Daly. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected from the drama script through repeated reading, identification, note- taking, classification, and contextual analysis. The findings showed 39 prohibitive expressions classified into three forms: Negative Imperative with 28 occurrences, Modal Prohibition with 7 occurrences, and Indirect Prohibition with 4 occurrences. The analysis also revealed six pragmatic meanings: Protection, Prohibition, Advice, Warning, Pleading, and Authority. Protection was the most frequent meaning with 9 occurrences, followed by Prohibition and Advice with 8 occurrences each, Warning and Pleading with 6 occurrences each, and Authority with 2 occurrences. The findings indicate that prohibitive expressions are not only used to prohibit actions but may convey different meanings depending on the context and the speaker's intention.
