Abstract

This research aimed to analyze how students’ confidence in English public speaking was developed through interactive discussion groups. The participants were 23 fourth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at the University of Pasir Pengaraian who had participated in interactive discussion group activities in English Public Speaking classes. The data were collected through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire consisted of 20 statements using a five-point Likert scale, while the interviews were conducted to obtain in-depth information about students’ experiences and perceptions. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The questionnaire results showed an overall percentage of 68.70%, which was categorized as “Agree,” indicating that students generally perceived interactive discussion groups positively in developing their confidence in English public speaking. The interview findings further revealed that interactive discussion groups provided students with more opportunities to practice speaking, share ideas, express opinions. Therefore, the study concludes that interactive discussion groups contributed positively to the development of students’ confidence in English public speaking by providing regular speaking practice, supportive peer interaction, and opportunities for active participation.
