Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the pragmatic understanding that students require when studyng and teaching play in english deparment. Because theatre comprises deicxis, dpeech acts, implied menaings, and context dependent phrases, pragmatic competence is crucial to comprehending it. This study examines how students interpret pragmatics’ importance in understanding and performing dramatic texts usin a mixed method approach that includes wuestionnaire and interviews. The results show that the majority of students comprehend the value of pragmatics in deciphering dialogue, reading the intents of characters and improving performance. The results also reveal that pragmatics is not given enough attention in drama classes. The incorporation of pragmatic components into drama instruction is therefore essential to enhancing students’ interpretative and communication skills. The necessity for curriculum development the encourages the integration of pragmatic awareness into drama based language training is highlighted by this study
