Abstract
The purpose of the research was to analyze types of impoliteness strategies used by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in their first presidential election debate and to analyze the meaning of utterances in using impoliteness strategies in this debate. In conducting this research, the researcher used the theory of Jonathan Culpaper. Based on Jonathan Culpaper theory, there were five types of impoliteness strategies (bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness and withhold politeness). then the researcher used qualitative method because the data of this research were in the form of utterances producted by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. In collecting the data, the researcher took the data from the script of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s utterances in their first presidential election debate in September 26 th 2016. The results of this research showed that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton used only four impoliteness strategies out of five strategies which named: 1. Bald on Record Impoliteness, 2. Posistive Impoliteness, 3. Negative Impoliteness, 4. Sarcasm or Mock Politeness.
