Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how is the students’ impromptu speech at English Vaganza Competition organizedUniversity of pasir Pengaraian. The kind of this research was descriptive quantitative. The researcher used video record about students’ performance. This quantitative research used some raters. Sampling used by using total sampling technique. These sample included 19 students join in an impromptu speech competition at English Vaganza Competition. The steps in analyzing the data were collecting the data, analyzing the data, and displaying the result of the analysis. In collecting the data, researcher was used video record and rater. In analyzing the data, the researcher was used the indicator of impromptu speech; they are the purpose, organizes the content, supports ideas, incorporates stories and examples and summarizes the main idea(s), demonstrates awareness of listener’s needs, speaks clearly with appropriate vocabulary and information, uses tone, speed, and volume as tools. Demonstrates complexity of vocabulary and thought, the last appears comfortable with audience. Based on the result of the analysis, it can be concluded that the students’ impromptu speech at English Vaganza Competition was fair. The students in impromptu speech competition at English Vaganza Competition in University of Pasir Pengaraian had Fair level. 4 students (21.1 %) had the very good level. 4 students (21.1 %) had the good level. 8 students (42.0 %) had the fair level and 3 students had the poor (15.8 %). It can be concluded that the students’ impromptu speech at English Vaganza Competition was fair.
