Abstract

This research aims to find the types of speech acts and speech acts that are predominantly used in The Railway Children Novel Written By E. Nesbit. Data sources in this research were divided into two types, namely primary data and secondary data, primary data was data taken directly and collected by researchers from fragments of conversations in the novel The Railway Children By E. Nesbit, and secondary data was data taken from books, journals, articles related to speech act analysis. This research used descriptive qualitative methods to analyze data in text form. The theories used in this research were Austin's theory and Searle's illocutionary classification. In this research, note-taking and reading techniques were used to collect data, and the data analysis techniques used were data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The results of the research show that there were three types of speech acts used in dialogue fragments in conversations in the novel The Railway Children By E. Nesbit: 115 utterances of locution speech act, which consisting of 27 utterances of Imperative, 50 utterances of interrogative, and 38 utterances of declarative. 100 utterances of illocution, including 39 utterances as assertive, 49 utterances of the directive, 9 utterances of expressive, 3 utterances of commissive, and no declarative speech acts were found in the novel and 36 utterances of the Perlocutionary speech act
