Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of students to identify the main idea and pattern of organization in reading comprehension in the hortatory exposition of the text at fifth semester in English Study Program in University of Pasir Pengaraian years 2016-2017. The research population comprised 38 students of the type of sample in this research is the "total sampling". This research used a descriptive qualitative, which has the goal of researchers to determine the ability of students to identify the main idea and pattern of organization in Reading Comprehension in the text hortatory exposition. This research was conducted by the steps; data collection, data processing, making inferences, and reports. Based on the analysis of data obtained by researchers, it can be concluded that the ability of students to identify the semester V Main Idea category fair with percentage 44.74% or 17 students. In identifying the pattern of organization, there were 14 students in the poor category with a percentage of 36.84%.The factors that affect students in Reading Comprehension on the intellectual aspect, the percentage 62.5%, there are 20 students who agree on a statement “I can identifying pattern of organization’’ While environmental factors that there are 20 students with the percent 55.26% in the high category.Concentration on reading material allow the progress of my ability in understanding the reading will increase ".
