Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of Tic tac toe toward the students’ simple past tense mastery of SMPN 1 Bangun Purba. This research was conducted in February 2016. The sample used in this research was the fifth grade students where the number of the population was 50 students. The researcher divided them into two classes such as control class who got the conventional technique in learning simple past tense and experimental class who were taught simple past tense through the use of Tic tac toe technique. In this research, the researcher conducted pre-test and post-test to find out the effect of Tic tac toe toward their simple past tense mastery. According to the test given, the researcher found that in pre-test session the control class students’ got the average score 49 and it was very poor category and the experimental class students got the average score 51 and it was a poor category. After giving a treatment by using Tic tac toe, the researcher found that students’ simple past tense mastery average score was 67 and it can be classified in the fair level, meanwhile the control class who were taught by using conventional technique got 59 as their average score. Based on the statistical analysis using SPSS, the researcher found that there were a significant effect of the use Tic tac toe toward students’ simple past tense mastery.
