Abstract
This research aims to analyze the needs of students and teachers regarding the integration of the Malay language into the elementary school curriculum in Rokan Hulu Regency. This research was motivated by the importance of the Malay language as a language used in daily life and as part of the local identity and culture of the Rokan Hulu community. This research employed a quantitative descriptive design using a needs analysis approach based on the theory of Hutchinson and Waters. Research participants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 30 fifth, seven grade students and 12 teachers from three elementary schools in Rambah Hilir Subdistrict: SDN 001 Rambah Hilir, SDN 002 Rambah Hilir, and SDN 005 Rambah Hilir. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The needs analysis covered two main aspects: the need for the Malay language and the need for its integration into the elementary school curriculum, which were analyzed based on the aspects of necessities, wants, and lacks. The results of the research indicate that students and teachers have positive needs and perceptions regarding the integration of the Malay language into learning. The Malay language is considered important for supporting communication, improving literacy, preserving local culture, and strengthening regional identity. In addition, the results of the study indicate a need for the provision of learning materials, vocabulary development, and broader opportunities to use the Malay language in learning activities. However, there are several shortcomings, particularly the limited availability of learning materials and the lack of interest among some students in using the Malay language formally in the school setting. Thus, the integration of the Malay language into the elementary school curriculum in Rokan Hulu is necessary as an effort to meet the needs of students and teachers while supporting the preservation of the local language and culture.
