Abstract

This research investigated the main characters in the novel The Adventure of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. Characters are one of the essential elements in literary works. Especially in novels, the characters in a literary work are created by the author to convey his ideas and feelings about something happening in this world. The novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi which was translated by Carol Della Chiesa into English was chosen for this research because it is exciting to research. Another reason is the formation of the character Pinocchio, the main character who plays a vital role in this story. The purpose of this research was to analyze the main characters in the novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. Data consists of primary data and secondary data. Data collection was carried out in several steps, namely reading, writing, marking, and then describing all the data been marked in the novel. Next, record the data on the data card been obtained from the novel. The recording step was to record the results of the description and recording according to the problem formulation in the novel "The Adventure of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi. The research results show that there were three main characters, namely (1) Pinocchio, who is the protagonist and is dynamic in the form of 20 direct characterizations and 22 indirect characterizations. (2) Gappetto, namely the protagonist, has static characters in the form of 3 direct characterizations and ten indirect characterizations. (3) The blue hair fairy who is the protagonist and mentor for Pinocchio has static characters in the form of 1 direct character and seven indirect characters. Based on this analysis, it can be concluded that in the novel The Adventure of Pinocchio the researcher found three main characters, two types of character function, and two types of character development. In analyzing the characterization the researcher found 24 direct and 39 indirect characterizations. The main character who was told the most stories and has the most characterizations is Pinocchio. Namely 20 direct characterizations and 22 indirect characterizations.
