Abstract
This study aims to analyze the difficulties faced by English Study Program students at the University of Pasir Pengaraian in the listening section of the TOEFL preparation test. The research focuses on internal and external factors that contribute to these challenges. Internal factors include limited vocabulary, lack of selfconfidence, poor grammar comprehension, and difficulty concentrating. External factors include unfamiliar accents, rapid speech, unclear pronunciation, and poor audio quality. This study used a descriptive qualitative research design; data were collected from 35 students’ through questionnaires and 25 student' interviews. The questionnaire used 50 statements, and the interview used 10 questions. The findings indicate that limited vocabulary and anxiety are the most significant internal challenges, while unfamiliar accents and poor sound quality are the dominant external barriers. The higher percentage of ―Agree‖ responses for external factors (55.77% than 55.66%). The higher percentage of "Totally Agree" responses for external factors (21.26% than 17.82% for internal factors) indicates that external factors are slightly more immediately recognized as barriers than internal factors. The study points out the importance of improving students' listening skills by addressing internal and external factors. Recommendations include increasing vocabulary acquisition, enhancing teaching strategies, and providing more practice sessions with diverse audio materials. These efforts are critical in preparing students for the TOEFL test and improving their English proficiency.
