Abstract

The purpose of the research is code switching, which was often used by UPP Radio 100 FM broadcasters as an effect of the need for bilingualism in modern life. In this study, the researcher only focuses on code switching which was often used by broadcasters of UPP Radio 100 FM as an effect of the need for bilingualism in modern life. This study was limited to several points: types of English code switching and reasons for using English code switching. All data were obtained from a program owned by UPP Radio 100 FM in the form of written data and oral data. Oral data was recorded and written, then used for types of English code switching and written data was obtained through interviews conducted by researchers with broadcasters for reasons for using English code switching. The analysis begins by identifying the types of code switching based on the theory of Poplack (1980) and the reasons for the used of English code switching were identified using the theory of Hoffman (1991). Based on the analysis, it was found that there are 3 types of code switching used 17 Tag Switching, 20 Inter Sentential Switching and 20 Intra Sentential Switching and for reasons for using English code switching, three of the seven reasons for the nine interview questions that the researchers conducted were found: talking a particular topic, quoting somebody else, expressing group identity.
