Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out what students' strategies are for writing essays. The researcher employs a descriptive-qualitative data analysis technique. The data obtained were taken from the sixth-semester students of the English study program at the University of Pasir Pengaraian. There were two instruments used in data collection. There were questionnaires and interviews. The researcher has collected the data in two ways: directly or face-to-face in the classroom, and through the intermediary of cell phones or applications such as WhatsApp. The population and sample consist of 23 students. The researcher found that four strategies for writing essays were used, such as making a list, free writing, mapping, and editing. The researcher found that strategy making a list with a total of 18 students (78,27%), strategy free writing with a total of 19 students (82,7%), strategy mapping with a total of 18 students (78,27%), and lastly, strategy editing with a total of 18 students (78,27%). It can be concluded that all the strategies used by students in writing essays. However, strategy-free writing implies that free writing is an effective, useful, and most-used strategy for students in the sixth semester at the University of Pasir Pengaraian. Because of the strategies, it increases students‘ writing fluency and improves students‘ writing essay confidence.
